How to Keep Your Fresh Flowers Looking Beautiful

Proper flower care can help your fresh, hand-tied bouquet stay beautiful for longer. Flowers are living, natural products, so their lifespan will vary depending on the flower variety, room temperature and how they are cared for after delivery.

By following these simple flower care tips, you can help maintain the freshness, colour and beauty of your bouquet for as long as possible.

Important Summer Flower Care Advice

During hot summer weather, flowers may need extra care.

Change the vase water more frequently, ideally every day or whenever it becomes cloudy. Keep your flowers away from direct sunlight, warm windows, heaters and other sources of heat, as high temperatures can cause flowers to wilt more quickly.

Fresh Flower Care Tips

Clean the Vase

Before placing your flowers in a vase, wash it thoroughly with warm water and soap. A clean vase helps remove bacteria that could shorten the life of your flowers.

Rinse the vase carefully before adding fresh water.

Use Fresh, Cool Water

Fill the vase with fresh, cool water.

Change the water every two to three days, or more often during warm weather. If the water becomes cloudy, replace it immediately and clean the vase before refilling it.

Trim the Flower Stems

Using clean, sharp scissors or a knife, cut approximately 2–3 centimetres from the bottom of each stem.

Cut the stems at an angle to increase the surface area available for water absorption. An angled cut also helps prevent the stems from resting flat against the bottom of the vase.

Remove Leaves Below the Waterline

Remove any leaves or foliage that would sit below the surface of the water.

Leaves left underwater can decay and encourage bacterial growth, which may block the stems and prevent the flowers from absorbing water effectively.

Add Flower Food

If flower food is included with your bouquet, follow the instructions on the packet and add the recommended amount to the vase water.

Avoid adding too much flower food, as the correct balance of water and nutrients is important. When changing the water, add fresh flower food where available.

Keep Flowers Away from Direct Sunlight and Heat

Place your bouquet in a cool location away from:

  • Direct sunlight

  • Radiators and heaters

  • Warm windows

  • Air-conditioning vents

  • Strong drafts

A cooler environment will usually help your flowers remain fresh for longer.

Keep Flowers Away from Ripening Fruit

Do not place your flowers close to bowls of ripening fruit.

Fruit releases ethylene gas as it ripens, which can cause flowers to age and wilt more quickly.

Re-Cut the Stems Regularly

Every few days, remove the flowers from the vase and trim a small amount from the bottom of each stem.

This refreshes the cut surface and helps the flowers continue to absorb water efficiently.

Remove Wilting Flowers and Foliage

Some flowers may naturally last longer than others.

Remove any wilted flowers, damaged petals or decaying leaves from the arrangement. This helps keep the remaining flowers looking fresh and reduces the spread of bacteria.

Mist Flowers Carefully

Some flowers may benefit from a very light mist of clean water, particularly in warm or dry conditions.

Avoid heavily spraying the petals, as excess moisture may damage delicate flowers or encourage marks and mould.

Enjoy Your Flowers for Longer

Every bouquet is unique, and some flower varieties naturally have a longer vase life than others. Regularly changing the water, keeping the vase clean and protecting your flowers from heat can make a noticeable difference.

With a little care and attention, your Same Day Flowers bouquet can continue to bring colour, fragrance and happiness to your home for days to come.
